Introduce New Color Palettes and Trends in Your Fall Decorating

Take a detour from your customary approach and change your seasonal decor? We’ve got some ideas for ways you can introduce new color palettes and trends in your fall decorating.

Let’s restart your approach by refreshing your perspective!

Trending fall color palettes

There’s no denying that autumn is awash with shades of red, orange, and yellow. But that’s just a start. You can shift your spectrum to anywhere within these hues. How about a rich deep plum, vibrant mulberry, desert orange, or pale mustard? Go even deeper and head towards brown shades with cinnamon or lighter. Get inspiration from natural elements like pine cones, fall blooms, twigs, and straw.

One of the colors often overlooked in fall decor is green. This isn’t the grassy green of spring and summer, but an earthier one—a soft sage or deep olive, for example. These shades of green complement the fall color palette and balance the warm hues with a cooler one. What better way to transition from the bright shade of summer to winter’s chilly choices?

Tie it all together with another earth-inspired tone: almond. It’s not stark white but not deep brown, so the neutrality works in any decor.

A modern take on fall decorating

Are you ready for something different than “the usual”? Has your fall decor become uninspiring? We could all use inspiration in our lives, right?

Start with a different theme than fall harvest.

Minimal. For you, less is always more. You like your home to be simple, while also making a statement. Although autumn is the season of reaping the harvest, your theme is “quality over quantity”. If you need some modern fall decorating ideas, see how these fit into your scheme.

  • Choose just one or two colors, rather than a broad palette. The simplicity enables you to keep your decor focused.
  • Decide on zones that you want to decorate, where you can most often enjoy the fruits of your efforts, like the front entry, foyer, main living area, and don’t forget your own bedroom and bathroom.
  • Gather birch tree branches and place them in a tall vase, creating a natural accent that works with any colors.
  • Choose a large vase, basket, or piece of pottery that can be the focal point in a room, and build a display around it, with just a few items. Anchor the display by placing a table runner or tray underneath it.
  • Display a small collection of complementary items, like wooden cutting boards leaning up against a wall in your kitchen or breakfast nook. You can also try a simple array of glassware or a stack of books in your color palette (and tied with a ribbon or twine).

Cozy. You’ve spent most of this year in your home—working, studying, and staying safe. After a summer of enjoying outside time, use your fall decor to welcome this season of sweater weather, apple picking, pumpkin lattes, and the comfort foods that wrap you up in a cozy space. Here are a few ways you can incorporate the cozy theme in your fall decorating:

  • Place a rocking chair on the front porch. Drape a fleece or knitted blanket over it and place a basket of apples and twigs next to the rocking chair.
  • Swap out your home’s toss pillows with cushions of fall color and soft textures.
  • Light up clusters of candles throughout your home.
  • Choose white pumpkins and either apply decals, stencil, or paint “Welcome”, “Family”, or other words on them.
  • Set out some luminaria along the edge of your porch and walkway to gently light the way. For safety, use LED lights instead of burning candles.
  • Wrap twigs or cinnamon sticks around a jar or vase to serve as a centerpiece or candle holder.
  • Set up a snacking and flavor station near your coffee machine, including nuts, candy corn, and anything pumpkin—coffee, creamer, hot chocolate mix, cookies, scones, seeds, and even cereal.

Whimsical. If your decorating style tends toward fun and colorful, stick with it! Take your love of light-hearted whimsy to an autumn array of home decor that reflects your spirit. Be sure to carry that theme outdoors so that others can enjoy your fun fall home. Maybe these ideas can spark your creativity:

  • Paint your pumpkins and gourds with the colors that energize you: from rose gold to lime green or teal—whatever makes you smile. Be sure to find pumpkins in unusual shapes to enhance your unique style.
  • Craft a scarecrow that’s out-of-the-ordinary. Style it after a character or someone you know. It could be a chef holding a plate of pumpkins or a family of pumpkin-headed scarecrows wearing their masks. Browse Pinterest for ideas.
  • Accent your exterior and interior spaces with strings of lights in orange, purple, or green.
  • Print out funny fall sayings—“Alexa, rake the leaves”, “Oh my gourd!” ”Have a fall-y, jolly season”, “If the broom fits”. Place them in frames—just reuse what you already have “hanging around”.

Elegant. Maybe you’re someone who approaches decorating in any season with sophistication. Autumn is a season that fits perfectly with your taste. The simplicity of natural elements and the beauty of the rich seasonal hues present you with a wide array of choices for decorating your home for fall.

  • Your fall color palette can reflect the deep tones substituting a metallic gold for the yellow hue or perhaps copper in place of the red or orange. Keep your palette simple, to no more than 3 colors, and use the metallic with a light hand because it can easily become overpowering.
  • Strings of white lights used sparingly inside and outside your home set the stage for elegance.
  • Replace your toss pillows with velvet cushions in the colors of your elegant fall palette.

Your home is your canvas.

Whatever style you choose, remember that your goal is to please your own eye. Decorating is a reflection of your personality, so make it as individual as you are.

The same is true for the home itself. Over this past year, more and more people have discovered that their home just doesn’t fit their lifestyle. The need for more and better spaces has inspired them to buy a new home.
