One of the many advantages of living in Texas (and the Dallas-Fort Worth area, specifically) is the vast array of opportunities to experience the great outdoors, your way. Between the weather and the many options for recreation, you’re never at a loss for choices. In recent months, however, you might be feeling a bit limited, with pandemic-related closures and restrictions. That’s all the more reason that outdoor living spaces are more important than ever!
Your backyard is where you can feel free to play, entertain, and bask in the sun. Your outdoor living space should be a welcome extension of your home. From the patio to the borders of your yard, use it for a healthy, happy place to go when you need a dose of fresh air.
The great escape. Do you miss a beachy getaway? Create a staycation atmosphere in your backyard. Start with the patio, where you can decorate to a coastal theme, using shells, driftwood, and other natural elements. Add reminders from past vacations to put you in a vacation mood.
How about making a backyard beach for yourself? Mark off an area with pavers and fill it with sand. Then add beach chairs, an umbrella, a hammock, and some tiki torches. A water feature would be a nice addition here, too.
How does your garden grow? Put your green thumb to work in a garden. From flowers to veggies to herbs, reap what you sow! Limited on space? Set up a raised garden bed or place container gardens in the area where they can soak up the necessary sunshine or shade. Plus, with an endless array of colorful containers, you can really spruce up your yard. Think about some creative alternatives for your garden containers, too. A wheelbarrow, the basket on a bicycle, and a repurposed tire make for eye-catching gardens. You can also replace the seat from a dining chair with a basket of flowers, so pretty in any space. Convert an old pallet to a wall where you can hang herbs and succulents. Your garden is only limited by your imagination, not the size of your yard!
It’s all fun and games. You don’t need a big backyard to have fun playspace. Think of all the lawn games you could enjoy! Bocce, badminton, cornhole, croquet, lawn darts, and lawn bowling are easy to set up and take very little space. Also think about the outdoor-sized versions of some of your favorite classic games, like Connect 4, Yahtzee, Jenga, chess, checkers, and dominoes. Strike up a tournament with several games at your next cookout.
Don’t forget the nightlife. Recharging your spirit with outdoor fun isn’t limited to the daylight hours. Sitting under a starlit Texas sky presents a wonderful way to end the day. Set up a fire pit with seating around it, and then add a gourmet S’mores buffet—think Nutella, peanut butter cups, thin mint cookies, apple slices, chocolate-covered pretzels, toasted coconut, chopped nuts, and, of course, the usual ingredients.
String solar-powered lights around your yard to add a romantic mood. Maybe you should make that hammock big enough for two!
No matter what size yard you have, make the most of it. Choose activities that will add more life and style to your lifestyle.
